AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Big league talent is making a stop in the Panhandle. Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is in Amarillo, suiting up with the Sod Poodles as part of his rehab assignment.

Gurriel is getting back into rhythm as he works his way back from a torn ACL suffered last season. The MLB All-Star took batting practice ahead of the game, showing off the swing and power that earned him National League All-Star honors in 2023.

Clubhouse boost for young players

For the Sod Poodles, it’s not just a boost on the field but also a major lift in the clubhouse, as younger players get the valuable chance to be around and learn from a proven big leaguer.

As Gurriel continues on the path to recovery, he said his focus is on getting comfortable again and taking full advantage of every opportunity at the plate.

“Get back in rhythm, focus on my swing, focus on the little things, that I have to do, and just get healthy, be ready, be ready to go and help our big league club. Just play at 100%, feel 100%. When it comes to the progression, wants to take it inning by inning, at bat by at bat, and just feeling good and feeling healthy,” Gurriel said.

Message to minor leaguers

Gurriel also shared advice for minor leaguers about what it takes to reach the next level.

“Emphasize on the dedication, the discipline, and how to become a pro. They’re on a really good path, and I’m just glad that he’s here, able to see it,” he said.

First rehab assignment since 2023

Gurriel is expected to play in both games against the Frisco RoughRiders as he continues to work his way back. This marks Amarillo’s first rehab assignment since 2023, giving local fans another exciting chance to see big league talent up close at Hodgetown.
